To me a photograph of a person is more than simply adding another image. It shows the sitter as they reveal themselves, and choose to reveal themselves, in the encounter we share. A portrait should also raise questions in the viewer: who is this person, what is going through their mind? The aim is a lasting image in which connection and recognition are felt.
Pinhole
A few years ago I was asked to take part in World Pinhole Day. Experimenting with cola cans, pinpricks and black matt paint brought the first good results. The dreamlike atmosphere of pinhole photography appeals to me enormously. Besides portraits, still lifes, cityscapes and objects are rewarding subjects for a pinhole photograph.
Street
People are fascinating. In the street people behave far more naturally than in tighter social settings. I try to capture the "ordinary" person in an extraordinary situation, with a sense of compassion but also with humour. Light and composition play an important part in giving the image its strength. Street art, to me, can also be the colourful things I come across in the street.
